Horsford and Rosen Advocate for Increased Housing Support in Nevada

July 10, 2024

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) and Senator Jacky Rosen (NV) sent a joint letter to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), requesting an increase in the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority’s (SNRHA) Housing Choice Vouchers allocation by 10,000 vouchers over five years. This request aims to address the affordable housing crisis in Nevada and provide greater flexibility in voucher administration to better serve low-income households.

“Affordable housing is a critical issue affecting families in Nevada,” said Congressman Horsford. “By increasing the allocation of Housing Choice Vouchers and allowing more flexibility in their use, we can ensure that more Nevadans have a safe and affordable place to call home. This is about giving our community the tools it needs to thrive.”

“Hardworking Nevada families are feeling the squeeze of sky-rocketing housing prices, which is why I’m doing everything I can to lower costs and make housing more affordable in our state,” said Senator Rosen. “Congressman Horsford and I are pushing the Administration to expand the Housing Choice Voucher program so that more Nevadans can have access to affordable, reliable housing. I’ll continue fighting to lower prices for hardworking families.”

The letter emphasizes the urgency of addressing the affordable housing shortage in Nevada, which is among the most severe in the nation. With the SNRHA dealing with a waitlist exceeding 42,000, it would take more than three years just to clear the backlog at the current rate of voucher assistance without adding any additional individuals.

The letter proposes increasing the Housing Choice Voucher allocation by 10,000 vouchers over the next five years, raising the project-based voucher program cap and granting waivers to enhance flexibility in voucher selection and portability. These steps aim to improve the efficacy of the Housing Choice Voucher Program and provide relief to Nevada’s low-income households.
