Nevada’s Horsford introduces bill to boost wages and benefits for long term care workers
WASHINGTON (KOLO) - Nevada Representative Steven Horsford has introduced a bill that would strengthen wages and benefits for long term care workers in a move he hopes will improve nursing home care for Nevada seniors.
“Long-term care workers face low wages and challenging work conditions,”said Congressman Horsford. “I’ve seen the difference that high-quality care can make. My grandmother spent nearly thirty years in a nursing home after a debilitating stroke. This legislation will invest in our care workers in nursing homes across the country so they can retain their skilled workers, while also expanding the workforce by attracting new individuals to the field. I’ll continue advocating for those who work every day to take care of our loved ones and ensure they get the support they need.”
The Nursing Home Workforce Support and Expansion Act would provide funding for grants to states that support workers in post-acute and long-term care settings.
Grants will be provided to states and territories based on their senior and disabled population, and to tribes through a consultation process.
Horsford hopes the bill will give the long-term care industry a competitive advantage in the job market, as it currently struggles with turnover rates as high as 300%.
