Military Academy Nominations

The deadline to apply and submit all required documentation for a U.S. Military Academy nomination from Congressman Steven Horsford is Wednesday, November 1, 2023. No applications will be considered after that date.

THROUGH SEPTEMBER (of Senior Year) – Students apply to nominating authorities. Student should apply to all nominating sources which they are eligible for (Presidential, Vice Presidential, Senate, and House offices).

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2023 – Deadline to apply for nomination from Congressmen Steven Horsford. Please submit all documents as one packet. The packet should include the following:

  • Completed application
  • Personal Portrait and Personal Statement
    • Personal statement should reflect why you think you are a good candidate for one of our nation's service academies.
    • Photo should be at least 5x7.
    • The photo does not need to be a professional photo.
    • It is recommended that the photo be similar to a business headshot but that is not required. Photos depicting activities in which you are involved, such as sports or outdoor activities, are examples of acceptable photos. 
    • You can wear any uniform you are authorized to wear.
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • Letters of Recommendation should be from a person who has supervised, mentored, instructed, managed, or coached the applicant. Examples include but are not limited to teachers, employers, supervisors, faith leaders, etc.…
    • At least one letter should be from an academic instructor.
    • Extra letters will not be considered, nor will the office make the choice which letters will be considered so please only include three letters.
  • Official transcripts from every high school and college you have attended. 
    • Your transcript should include your Grade Point Average, complete junior year coursework, and classes you are currently taking for your senior year.
    • Transcripts must be sent by mail or email directly from your schools' registrar.
  • Official Test Scores
    • Readable copies of your test results are required. Grainy or distorted images will not be accepted.
    • Test scores will not be accepted after the November 1, 2023 deadline, with limited exceptions.

NOVEMBER 7, 2023 – Applicants are notified of interview appointments.

LATE NOVEMBER – EARLY DECEMBER – Applicants are interviewed by Selection Committees.

NO LATER THAN JANUARY 31, 2024 – Members submit nomination forms to each academy.

BY MAY 2024 – Applicants should have received confirmation of a decision from service academies.

MAY THROUGH JUNE 2024 – Academies may offer appointment to replace candidates who decline.

LATE JUNE – EARLY JULY 2024 – Newly Appointed class enters each academy.

*QUALIFIED STUDENTS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING ONE OF OUR NATION’S SERVICE ACADEMIES SHOULD NOT LIMIT THEMSELVES TO ONE ACADEMY. THEY SHOULD APPLY TO ALL OF THE ACADEMIES TO INCREASE THEIR CHANCES OF RECEIVING A NOMINATION AND APPOINTMENT.

Instructions

The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. For more information, please review the page of Frequently Asked Questions for those seeking a Military Academy Nomination.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Congressman Horsford may nominate up to ten individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to our district.
