Congressman Horsford Applauds House Passage Of Equality Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following House passage of the Equality Act - legislation he co-sponsored to extend anti-discrimination protections to LGBTQ Americans.
"I'm proud to support federal policy codifying principles of the Equality Act. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to join us in taking up this landmark legislation," said Congressman Horsford. "All Americans deserve protection against discrimination - no matter their race, gender, religion, disability status, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Equality Act brings us one step closer towards everyone in our community being treated equally under the law."
The Equality Act extends the full anti-discrimination protections under the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other key pillars of fairness and justice in our country to LGTBTQ Americans. Sexual orientation and gender identity deserve full civil rights protections – not just in the workplace, but in every place: in education, housing, credit, jury service and public accommodation. No one should ever be forced to lose their jobs, their home or live in fear because of who they are or whom they love.
As Majority Leader of the Nevada State Senate, Congressman Horsfordhelped pass Nevada's Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in 2011, barring employers from discriminating based on gender identity or expression.
