Congressman Horsford Appointed To Serve On House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee, And House Budget Committee

January 16, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following statement upon his selection to serve as a member of the House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee and a member of the House Budget Committee.

"When I ran for Congress, I promised to fight to lower prescription drug costs and level the playing field for middle class families. My assignments will allow me to deliver on those commitments to the people of Southern Nevada," said Congressman Horsford. "These two committees are at the center of this Congress' efforts to reduce out-of-pocket health care costs and craft a federal budget that puts government back on the side of the people. I'm grateful for the opportunity to give Southern Nevadans a voice on these important panels."

Congressman Horsford is Nevada's first representative on the Ways & Means Committee since 2012. Ways & Means is the oldest committee of the U.S. Congress and derives its jurisdiction directly from Article I of the Constitution which mandates that all tax-related bills originate in the House of Representatives.

The Ways & Means Subcommittee on Health handles legislation and oversight related to Medicare, which provides health care to nearly 500,000 Nevadans over 65 years old as well as to those with disabilities. The subcommittee also handles legislation and oversight of the Affordable Care Act.

Congressman Horsford will serve as one of five Ways & Means Committee members selected to serve on the separate House Budget Committee. The Budget Committee is the chief legislative panel conducting oversight of the federal budget process. The committee's chief responsibility is to draft an annual Congressional Budget Resolution, which directs Congress on how the federal government invests taxpayer dollars and expands economic opportunities for Americans.
