Congressman Horsford Introduces Legislation To Protect Nevadans With Pre-Existing Conditions And Ban ‘Junk’ Health Plans

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) joined Congresswoman Kathy Castor (FL-14), Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11), Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44), and Gwen Moore (WI-04) to introduce legislation overturning the Trump Administration's rule allowing short-term ‘junk' health plans that permit insurance companies to discriminate against Nevadans with pre-existing conditions, and refuse to provide essential health services.
"Junk health care plans threaten to return us to the days when insurance companies could turn away sick children, and cancer patients like North Las Vegas' Joe Merlino had to pay sky-high insurance premiums," said Congressman Horsford. "This legislation will ensure that Americans with pre-existing conditions are protected from insurance company discrimination and that working families have access to essential benefits like maternity care, mental health treatment, and affordable prescription drugs."
Additional Background On ‘Junk' Health Plans
- ‘Junk' plans raise premiums on sick Nevadans by creating a separate insurance marketplace for healthy Nevadans. (Kaiser Family Foundation)
- 'Junk' plans allow insurance companies to retroactively cancel coverage after patients file claims. (Association Of Community Associated Plans)
- ‘Junk' plans allow insurance companies to re-impose pre-Affordable Care Act lifetime limits on coverage. (Kaiser Family Foundation)
