Congressman Horsford Issues Statement to Mark One Year Since the January 6 Insurrection

January 6, 2022

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) released the following statement to mark one year since the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol:

"The deadly insurrection of January 6, 2021 was more than an attack on a building. It was an assault against members of Congress, our staff, law enforcement, and the very soul of democracy. Despite the lies from some of my Republican colleagues, we know the insurrectionists did not come to the Capitol to protest peacefully. Their goal was to invalidate the votes of their fellow Americans, overthrow a democratic election, and install a tyrant as the leader of the free world.

"The insurrection was not a spontaneous event. For weeks before the Capitol was attacked, Donald Trump and his collaborators spread lies about the 2020 election and tried to undermine faith in the election results. In my state of Nevada, Trump's allies made despicable and false claims of voter fraud against thousands of voters, including Nevada service members stationed abroad. After those efforts failed, Trump unleashed a mob of armed terrorists and ignored pleas from his own allies to stop the violence. We must never forget his culpability for the deaths that resulted from the insurrection.

"Rebuilding from the insurrection starts with accountability for those responsible. But it also means restoring the faith in democracy that has been damaged in recent years. As First Vice Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, I join our Chairwoman Joyce Beatty to call on the Senate to act with urgency and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act into law. Our democracy is only strong when all Americans have a voice in government.

"I will always remember the terror and anguish of January 6 — but also the courage and strength displayed by the Capitol Police, members of local law enforcement, and the National Guard. Our nation will be forever indebted to the heroes who defended the Capitol and saved our democracy."
