Congressman Horsford Pushes for Modernized Firefighting Capabilities for Nevada Army Guard in House Armed Services Subcommittee Hearing

July 1, 2021

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Yesterday, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) joined his colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee to hear from military leaders on rotary wing aviation programs in the fiscal year 2022 budget request.

"Yesterday, I was glad to have the opportunity to speak with senior military officials about how the National Guard is responding to wildfires across the Western United States," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "As climate change increases the risk and intensity of wildfires, Nevada's National Guard aviators are playing an ever-growing role in aerial firefighting. I look forward to working with Guard leaders to ensure that our aviation units have the equipment they need to stay safe as they defend our homeland."

In his statement and subsequent questioning, Congressman Horsford asked the senior officials from the U.S. Army about how the Army plans to support Nevada Army National Guard members as they experience an increase in the number of risky fire fighting missions. Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army Lieutenant General Erik Peterson said that the Army consults with the Army Guard on how to best utilize combat-ready vehicles in aerial firefighting and ensure that our service members can keep Western communities safe from fires.
