Congressman Horsford’s Statement on New Deadline for Nevadans to Claim $1,200 Economic Stimulus Payments

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV) released the following statement after the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announcement that it would extend the deadline to register for an economic impact payment (EIP) to November 21, 2020.

"The IRS delayed its outreach to Americans who typically do not file a tax return, which led to a very short time frame in which to meet their registration deadline. For months, I have heard from Nevadans, including those in vulnerable, low-income, and underserved communities, who have not yet received their EIP," said Congressman Horsford. "The IRS's decision to provide millions of non-filers an extra five-weeks to register for an EIP will make a difference for Nevada families, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and many others who typically do not file and who are struggling to get by during the COVID-19 recession."

While most eligible U.S. taxpayersautomatically received their EIP, others who don't have a filing obligation must use the Non-Filers tool to register with the IRS to get their money. Typically, this includes people who receive little or no income.

TheNon-Filers tool is secure and is based on Free File Fillable Forms, part of the Free File Alliance's offering of free products on IRS.gov. Specifically, the Non-Filers tool is designed for people with incomes typically below $24,400 for married couples, and $12,200 for singles who could not be claimed as a dependent by someone else. This includes couples and individuals who are experiencing homelessness. Anyone using the Non-Filers tool can speed the arrival of their payment by choosing to receive it by direct deposit. Those not choosing this option will get a check. Beginning two weeks after they register, people can track the status of their payment using theGet My Payment tool, available only on IRS.gov.
