Congressman Horsford Secures $2.76 Million for Nevada AmeriCorps Programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) announced his office secured $2.76 million for the Nevada State Service Commission and local AmeriCorps grantees to provide relief to communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan that Congressman Horsford helped to pass in March 2021.
The funding will provide:
- $2,634,123 to the Nevada State Service Commission (Nevada Volunteers) to increase living allowances, stabilize Nevada's AmeriCorps program, and expand AmeriCorps opportunities over the next three years.
- $38,401 to NyE Communities Coalition's Partners of Prevention Program in Nevada's Fourth District and $93,066 to the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation. This funding can be used to increase AmeriCorps living allowances, stabilize existing programs, expand service opportunities, and make service more accessible and inclusive.
"As Nevada rebounds from the pandemic, dedicated AmeriCorps volunteers are working to make sure every community is included in our recovery," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "Seven months ago, I fought to pass the American Rescue Plan and bring billions in pandemic relief back to Nevada. I'm excited that Nevada Volunteers and NyE Communities Coalition will be able to use some of this funding to continue their good work."
"The American Rescue Plan will allow AmeriCorps to empower local, state, and national service partners to address the most urgent needs facing their communities," said Sonali Nijhawan, director of AmeriCorps State and National. "These funds will make service more accessible by increasing the living allowance and strengthening programs, enabling more AmeriCorps members to get things done for America."
"Thank you for your support Congressman Horsford. NyE Communities Coalition appreciates the funding and resources that come from the AmeriCorps State and National Grants. AmeriCorps and VISTAs are key to the success we have had in addressing substance abuse, health, and wellness in our communities," said Stacy Smith, Executive Director of the NyE Communities Coalition. "Serving through the AmeriCorps program is a great opportunity for civic engagement. NyECC welcomes any questions about the program and would encourage anyone interested to apply to be an AmeriCorps member in their community."
AmeriCorps is a federal program that recruits Americans to serve their communities and address the country's greatest needs. Members typically commit to a 10- to 12-month term of service with schools, non-profits, public agencies, or faith and community-based organizations. For many partner organizations, support from an AmeriCorps member is equivalent to adding a full-time staff member at no extra cost.
