Congressman Steven Horsford Advocates for Veterans and Homeownership in Minority Communities During House Budget Committee Hearing

June 23, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) joined his colleagues in the House Budget Committee to host a hearing with the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Marcia Fudge and hear her testimony about the role of the fiscal year 2022 HUD budget in expanding safe and affordable housing.

"During today's hearing, Secretary Fudge made a clear and convincing case for greater investments in affordable housing," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "The fiscal year 2022 budget will provide HUD with much-needed tools to address the racial disparities in home ownership, assist first-time homebuyers, and tackle the root causes of the homeownership gap, including the burden of student loans on borrowers of color. I'm thankful for Secretary Fudge and President Biden's shared commitment to expanding affordable housing, and look forward to working with them to ensure that all Nevadans have access to affordable, long-term housing."

During the hearing, Congressman Horsford asked Secretary Fudge about HUD initiatives to address the disproportionate impact of student loans on homeownership rates for Black Americans. Secretary Fudge noted that the fiscal year 2022 HUD budget includes nearly $100 million to support first-time homebuyers, and outlined a number of HUD initiatives to strengthen access to credit for communities of color. Congressman Horsford also encouraged Secretary Fudge to visit the Choice Neighborhood in Nevada's Fourth District to see the impact that Choice grants are making in Nevada's low-income communities.
