Congressman Steven Horsford Announces Homeland Security Grant Funding For North Las Vegas Fire Department
North Las Vegas, NV — The fire department of the city of North Las Vegas in Nevada's Fourth Congressional District will receive $203,036 in funding from the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to strengthen the city's preparedness and ability to respond to fire hazards.
"Our emergency responders in North Las Vegas, and Nevada at large, put their lives on the line every day to defend their neighbors. These well-deserved and necessary funds to the North Las Vegas Fire Department (NLVFD) will bolster efforts from our emergency services to protect my constituents against fires and other hazards that may arise," Congressman Horsford (NV-04) said. "With the growing threat of climate change, fires become increasingly more common in Las Vegas and the surrounding communities as temperatures rise. Channeling resources to our first responders who work tirelessly to keep our families safe is more important now than ever."
The NLVFD employs 170 people in the Las Vegas Valley. In 2017, the NLVFD responded to 29,064 emergency incidents. The department also engages in community outreach programs to educate the community of North Las Vegas about fire safety, including programs like 9-1-1 Make the Right Call; Stop, Drop-n-Roll; Sparky's ABC's of Fire; Supervised station tours for youth organizations; Be cool about fire safety; and Sparky's S.A.F.E Team.
Since 2001, the AFG Program has provided approximately $7.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, as well as firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training. This latest award will add another $315 million to first-responder organizations that need support to improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.
