Congressman Steven Horsford Applauds President Biden’s Action Against Gun Violence
Congressman Horsford’s Break the Cycle of Violence Act would strengthen the federal government’s response to gun violence and invest in community-based interventions to save lives
NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Today, Congressman Horsford released the following statement commending President Biden's actions to invest in community-based gun violence prevention, address the rise of untraceable "ghost guns" and dangerous gun accessories, and nominate gun safety champion David Chipman to serve as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
Along with Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Congressman Horsford is the sponsor of the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, legislation that would complement the Biden action by investing in community-based interventions to address the root causes of gun violence and stop gun deaths.
"With today's announcement, President Biden is taking much-needed action to prevent gun violence, invest in community-based interventions, and save lives," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "I applaud his swift action after the tragic mass shootings over the last several weeks, and I look forward to working closely with the administration and the Department of Justice to secure funding for evidence-based gun violence prevention programs in Nevada's Fourth District."
Like many Americans, Congressman Horsford knows the personal toll of gun violence. When Congressman Horsford was nineteen years old, his father was shot and killed just blocks from where the younger Horsford grew up. In 2017, his community in Las Vegas was the site of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history when a gunman killed 60 festivalgoers. These tragedies have driven a lifelong commitment to preventing gun violence and investing in gun safety.
Congressman Horsford's Break the Cycle of Violence Act would address the disproportionate impact of gun violence on people of color and urban communities. The legislation would provide federal grants to communities for evidence-based gun violence intervention and prevention programs designed to interrupt cycles of violence.
