Congressman Steven Horsford, Attorney General Aaron Ford Host Roundtable on Harmful Trump Administration SNAP Cuts

February 14, 2020

Las Vegas, Nev. — On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, Congressman Steven Horsford and Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford will host a roundtable with local advocates on the Trump administration's discriminatory SNAP benefit rollbacks issued in a final rule last year.

"With this rule, the Trump administration is taking food from the tables of our poorest and most vulnerable Nevadans," Congressman Horsford said when the rule was initially announced. "This rule shows the administration's shocking and inhumane disregard for the health and well-being of Nevada households who rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table. The truth is many SNAP recipients are either attempting to find work or face hardships that prevent them from doing so. This administration would rather demonize them than help them."

"SNAP has served as our country's primary response to hunger since 1977, including my own when I was a young, single father and college student," Nevada Attorney General Ford said. "This is an important safety-net program proven to help people lift themselves out of poverty."

In November 2019, the Trump Administration issued a final rule that increases onerous work requirements for hungry Americans relying on the lifeline of the SNAP assistance and weakens states' ability to provide food assistance in high-unemployment areas and threatens the benefits of 2.1 million Americans. Last month, Attorney General Ford joined a group of 15 attorneys general and New York City in a lawsuit to prevent the Trump Administration from eliminating food assistance for nearly 700,000 Americans, including nearly 46,000 Nevadans.
