Congressman Steven Horsford Celebrates Victory of Permanent, Full Land and Water Conservation Funding

August 4, 2020

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released a statement following the signing of H.R. 1957, The Great American Outdoors Act, into law.

"My district is home to some of the most beautiful, vibrant landscapes in Nevada that have been preserved and made possible through the Land and Water Conservation Fund," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "Today, America made a historic investment in our outdoor spaces that will continue to benefit our economy, fight climate change, and provide recreational opportunities for families. The signing of The Great American Outdoors Act into law will ensure that Nevada's public lands are protected for future generations."

Congressman Horsford voted to pass The Great American Outdoors Act, bipartisan conservation legislation that provides permanent funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

The LWCF has provided significant funding to Nevada's public spaces and ensures recreational access to outdoor activities including hunting and fishing. Since 1964, Nevada received approximately $107 million in LWCF funding to protect places such as Toiyabe National Forest, Stillwater and Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuges, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Under this legislation, Nevada will receive more than $4 million per year in LWCF funding, nearly doubling the annual funding from previous years.

Outdoor reaction has provided significant economic benefits to Nevada, generating $12.6 billion in consumer spending, $1.1 billion annually in state and local tax revenue, and provides 87,000 jobs.
