Congressman Steven Horsford Releases Statement in Support of the American Families Plan

April 28, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford released the following statement in support of President Biden's American Families Plan.

"As we work to rebuild and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we can't afford to go back to the status quo. We need generational investments in our country to grow the middle class and create a bright future for every family," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "The American Families Plan and the American Jobs Plan will deliver on our promise to build back better for the American people and ensure that no one is left behind. I look forward to working with the Biden administration and my colleagues in Congress to deliver this legislation on behalf of all Nevadans."

The American Families Plan includes transformational investments to expand economic opportunities for all Nevadans by:

  • Extending key tax cuts for families, including the Child Tax Credit, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
  • Providing universal preschool for all three- and four-year olds.
  • Addressing teacher shortages by increasing scholarships for future teachers, expanding teacher preparation programs, and strengthening the pipeline for teachers of color.
  • Expanding nutrition opportunities for American families through school meals and summer EBT.
  • Modernizing and reforming the unemployment insurance system to ensure that workers have the support they need during future economic downturns.
  • Subsidizing tuition for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).
  • Increasing the maximum Pell Grant award by approximately $1,400, a key step in President Biden's commitment to double the maximum award.
