Congressman Steven Horsford’s Statement on Congressional Certification of the 2020 Election

January 7, 2021

WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford released the following statement after Congress formally certified President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' victory in the 2020 election.

"With this morning's vote, Congress certified President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' victory and demonstrated the strength of our democracy over the lawless forces that attacked the U.S. Capitol yesterday.

"President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris won decisively last November, with more than 81 million votes cast for their ticket. The American people chose the responsible, moral leadership that the Biden-Harris administration will bring to the White House, and today, Congress certified that choice.

"Despite the clear victory of the Biden-Harris ticket, President Trump and his allies have made groundless claims about the safety and security of our elections. Those claims are based in a despicable, selfish attempt to steal the election, and they have no foundation in fact.

"All voters deserve to have their votes counted in free and fair elections. Every state certified their election results before sending them to Congress and no state found any evidence of widespread voter fraud or election irregularities. In my state of Nevada, both the courts and Republican Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske rejected efforts by the Trump campaign to disenfranchise military voters and voters of color and protected our democratic process. The 2020 elections were safe, secure, and fair.

"This certification was not the formality it has been in years past. As we started this process, President Trump used his platform to incite insurrection against the government — putting our lives in danger and jeopardizing the very core of our democracy.

"His actions were unacceptable, and he must be impeached and removed from office before he can cause further damage to our democracy and public faith in our institutions. That process will move forward in due course.

"President Trump's presidency has been a dark time for America. With today's certification, Congress has affirmed the will of the people and opened the door to a brighter future."
