Congressman Steven Horsford on SCOTUS Decision for LGBTQ+ Employment Protections

June 15, 2020

Las Vegas, Nev. -- Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following statement on the ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States on Monday that a landmark civil rights law protects LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in employment, a resounding victory for LGBTQ+ rights from a conservative court.

The court decided by a 6-3 vote that a key provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 known as Title VII that bars job discrimination because of sex, among other reasons, encompasses bias against LGBTQ+ workers. Congressman Horsford released the following statement in support of the decision:

"Today, the Supreme Court is on the right side of history. As we celebrate Pride Month, it is now enshrined in our country's laws that all Americans, regardless of who you are or whom you love, are protected from discrimination in the workplace under federal law. Even as the Trump Administration undermines health care protections for our transgender loved ones, we have secured this victory for the LGBTQ+ community, for our democracy and for inherent American values of equality and justice.

As a member of the House Equality Caucus, I stand for LGBTQ+ Nevadans. And on this day, I am proud to declare that trans rights and gay rights are human rights."
