Congressman Steven Horsford Secures More Than $137 Million for Local Colleges, Universities, and Students
WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford announced that his office has secured more than $137 million in emergency funding to help college students and institutions of higher education around Nevada's Fourth District. Statewide, the American Rescue Plan provides over $200 million for 10 institutions of higher learning.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has forced students, educators, and administrators to adapt to new learning situations in the face of unprecedented hardship," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "I'm proud to have secured more than $137 million in emergency education funding through the American Rescue Plan to help Nevada students continue their education, improve their earnings potential, and build their futures. With this relief, Nevada is one step closer to a strong, equitable recovery from the pandemic."
The funding announced today will help institutions of higher education address the financial fallout from the pandemic and ensure that students can return to in-person learning safely. Half of the funding will be distributed in emergency cash assistance grants to help students facing hunger, homelessness, or other challenges.
The institutions receiving funding through this allocation include:
College of Southern Nevada - $59,400,717
University of Nevada, Las Vegas - $68,098,713
Nevada State College - $9,557,903
Students should contact their institutions for more information about the process to apply for emergency grants.
The American Rescue Plan also includes nearly $3 billion in additional funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), other Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), and other under-resourced institutions. This funding will be distributed at a later date.
