Congressman Steven Horsford Secures More than $2.7 Million in COVID-19 Response Funding for Health Centers in Nevada’s Fourth District

March 25, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford announced that his office has secured more than $2.7 million in COVID-19 response funding for two health centers in Nevada's Fourth District. Statewide, eight community health centers will receive more than $25 million from the American Rescue Plan to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts and services for vulnerable populations. The funding will be awarded beginning in April 2021 by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

"As we work to rebuild and recover from COVID-19, we must make sure that health centers serving our most vulnerable populations have the support they need. I'm proud that my office has secured more than $2.7 million for COVID-19 response programs at FirstMed Health and Wellness Center and Hope Christian Health Center, alongside six additional community health centers across Nevada," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "This funding will provide these centers with the support to reach marginalized communities and expand their vaccination efforts. I thank HHS Secretary Becerra and the Biden administration for their commitment to delivering the COVID-19 vaccine to all Americans and I look forward to working with them further to crush this virus."

"Every American should have the security of knowing they have access to quality, affordable health care, especially as we face a pandemic that has exposed the disparities facing rural, minority, and lower-income communities," said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. "The Biden Administration is committed to getting help to those who need it most, and the communities hit hardest by COVID-19 will benefit from these critical investments."

Health centers will be able to use the funds to support and expand COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and treatment for vulnerable populations; deliver needed preventive and primary health care services to those at higher risk for COVID-19; and expand health centers' operational capacity during the pandemic and beyond, including modifying and improving physical infrastructure and adding mobile units. This investment will help increase access to vaccinations among hard-hit populations, as well as confidence in the vaccine by empowering local, trusted health professionals in their efforts to expand vaccinations.

HRSA-funded health centers are community-based and patient-directed organizations that deliver affordable, accessible, quality, and cost-effective primary health care to medically underserved communities and vulnerable populations, including high-need urban, rural, and frontier communities across the country. Health centers serve 1 in 5 people living in rural communities, and 1 in 11 people nationwide. More than 91% of health center patients are individuals or families living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, and nearly 63% are racial or ethnic minorities.

The health centers that will be receiving this funding are:

  • FirstMed Health and Wellness Center: $1,827,750
  • Hope Christian Health Center Corp: $907,625
  • Nevada Health Centers, Inc.: $9,522,000
  • First Person Care Clinic: $1,477,125
  • Silver State Health Services: $892,125
  • Community Health Alliance: $5,053,500
  • Northern Nevada HIV Outpatient Program, Education and Services: $2,666,125
