Congressman Steven Horsford Statement in Support of Reproductive Rights Supreme Court Decision
Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following statement in support of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a Louisiana law regulating abortion clinics. The Court ruled that the law requiring doctors who perform abortions have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals creates an undue burden and is unconstitutional based on legal precedent in the landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.
"Today, the Supreme Court reaffirmed that reproductive rights are human rights. Overturning this restrictive law is a huge win for women who ought to have autonomy over their bodies. I will continue to fight to safeguard reproductive health care and prevent our country from returning to the days where unnecessary burdens obstruct personal medical decisions."
In December, Congressman Horsford signed an amicus brief in this case, June Medical Services LLC v. Russo, calling for the court to strike down the restrictive law, which would allow only one clinic and one abortion provider would remain in Louisiana – a state with over 360,000 women of reproductive age.
"Act 620, disguised as an effort to promote women's health, provides no medical benefit and instead will only create significant obstacles for women seeking abortions," the 161 lawmakers wrote in the brief.
