Horsford Announces Monumental Investment To Create High-Speed Rail in Nevada, Jobs for Local Community

December 5, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) announced that thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Law he voted and advocated for, a $3B grant will be awarded to the Nevada Department of Transportation to fund Brightline West, a high-speed rail system that will break new ground for the country, and connect Las Vegas with Southern California.

“This is great news for the people and the economy of Southern Nevada. By connecting Las Vegas to Southern California via high-speed rail, we will boost tourism, reduce congestion on the I-15 corridor, and create jobs. I have been engaged in conversations with Secretary Buttigieg, Brightline, and our labor leaders to ensure that local workers and our Nevada small businesses will be the ones to benefit from this historic and monumental investment. This will be the first true high-speed rail system in the nation, blazing a new path forward for our rail infrastructure, and we hope it will serve as a blueprint for fostering greater regional connections for many other cities across the country,” said Congressman Horsford.

Vince Saavedra, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Nevada Building Trades Union, added, "I want to thank our federal delegation for helping secure this crucial funding. Today marks a significant milestone for Southern Nevada workers. The Project Labor Agreement ensures thousands of skilled union members will contribute to the first speed rail in the West. Additionally, the 15% apprenticeship inclusion will ensure our training programs will have the demand to expand, opening the doors for more Nevadans to pursue a career in the trades. This historic project will create thousands of jobs and boost our local economy. Nevada was built on the backs of our labor union members, and this historic rail project will continue that legacy. I'm proud of our unions' pivotal role in this endeavor.”
