Horsford Demands Answers, Accountability on Illegal Tariffs and American Refunds

June 4, 2026

WASHINGTON D.C.- Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) pressed the U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a Ways and Means Committee hearing, demanding answers on how the Trump administration is addressing the growing affordability crisis caused by its own illegal tariffs and why American families are still waiting for their money back.

Despite repeated, direct questioning, Secretary Bessent failed to provide clear answers on the administration's handling of tariff refunds, leaving millions of Americans without the relief they are owed.

"These illegal tariffs have already cost the average American household and estimated additional $1,800 over the past year," said Rep. Horsford. "If this administration collected that money illegally, the American people deserve to get it back plain and simple. Instead, Secretary Bessent dodged every direct question, and this administration continues to delay, deflect, and deny. Enough excuses. Enough delays. Give the American people their money back."

Congressman Horsford has introduced the RELIEF Act, a straightforward solution that cuts through the red tape and puts money back in the pockets of American families fast.

The RELIEF Act would:

  • Require refunds within 90 days of enactment

  • Apply to covered tariffs collected since January 1, 2025
  • Eliminate the need for individual applications or formal protests

The American people work too hard to have their money taken through illegal tariffs and too hard to wait while this administration stonewalls, stalls, and sidesteps accountability. Secretary Bessent had his chance to answer for this administration's actions today and he chose silence over solutions. Congressman Horsford will keep fighting until every family gets the refund they are owed.
