Horsford Hopeful about Bipartisan Gun Violence Prevention Package in Congress

June 12, 2022

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV – Following bipartisan action in the House last week on the Protecting Our Kids Act, a group of 20 bipartisan Senators have agreed to an historic gun violence prevention package. The agreement includes community violence intervention funding to break the cycle of violence, sponsored by Congressman Steven Horsford.

"Although too many lives have been taken from their loved ones from senseless gun violence before we got to this point, I am hopeful that a bipartisan agreement will help propel Congress to finally take action and pass meaningful reforms," said Congressman Horsford. "So many Americans have been personally impacted by everyday gun violence and mass shootings. In recent weeks, we saw mass shootings in Uvalde, TX, Buffalo, NY, and Tulsa, OK. In 2017, my hometown of Las Vegas experienced the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Nearly 30 years ago, my father was shot and killed by senseless gun violence.

"While this agreement will not end all gun violence, it is a step in the right direction," continued Congressman Horsford. "It will bring real change. The people of Nevada and America have overwhelmingly called for commonsense gun safety measures that save lives and it is time for Congress to act."

The agreement includes:

  • Funding to incentivize state-level crisis intervention orders.
  • Investments in mental health support for children and families.
  • Funds for mental health programs in schools.
  • Protections for victims of domestic violence.
  • Clarifications to crack down on the unlicensed sale of firearms.
  • Additional vetting to buy a gun for individuals between the ages of 18-21.
  • Penalties for the illegal straw purchases of guns.
  • Increased funds for school security.
