Horsford Introduces the VET Extension Act to Support Veterans, Servicemembers, and Their Families
WASHINGTON – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) introduced the Veterans Education and Transfer Extension Act (the VET Extension Act), with the support of Congressmen Seth Moulton (MA-06) and Jamie Raskin (MD-08), to expand educational benefits for veterans, servicemembers, and their families, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, by promoting access to higher education. “The VET Extension Act is about fairness, opportunity, and respect for those who have served our country,” said Congressman Horsford. “It will make sure our veterans can complete their education without unnecessary hurdles and pass on the benefits they’ve earned to their kids. This is about investing in the future of our military, their families, and America as a whole.” “Servicemembers and their families make so many sacrifices for our country – they should be afforded every opportunity to succeed when they reintegrate into civilian life,” said Congressman Seth Moulton, a Marine veteran. “I’m proud to co-lead this bill, which expands veterans’ access to education. The more we can do in Congress to support veterans, the better.” The VET Extension Act will allow veterans and servicemembers who require additional time to complete remedial courses to utilize their Post-9/11 Educational Assistance more effectively. By extending the period of educational assistance to include up to 15 months for remedial courses, it will help ensure that all those who serve have the necessary support to achieve their educational goals. This increase is essential for veterans who need additional academic preparation and will ensure they can receive the solid educational foundation they deserve. In addition, the legislation will support the financial stability of military families and assist in leveling the playing field by building intergenerational wealth. It will allow servicemembers without dependents during their service to allocate their retention-based educational incentives to dependents they identify later. This provision will secure the educational future of military families and promotes their long-term financial security. |
