Horsford Leads Initiative to Honor Service and Uphold America’s Promise to Veterans

Lawmaker to Introduce Legislative Package that Expands Education Opportunities, Strengthens Benefit Oversight, and Preserves the Legacy of America’s Heroes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In recognition of Veterans Day, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) will introduce a package of legislation that reaffirms America’s promise to those who have served and sacrificed for our nation. The bills strengthen opportunities for veterans and their families, improve objectivity in veterans’ services, and ensure that all who have contributed to America’s defense are remembered with the honor they deserve.

“Veterans Day is not only a time to thank those who have worn the uniform, but a time to renew our commitment to honoring their service,” Rep. Horsford said. “The bills I’m introducing will help veterans complete their education, ensure their benefits are delivered with integrity and accountability, and recognize those whose sacrifices have too often been forgotten. Taken together, the package reaffirms our commitment to every American who has worn the uniform.”

The legislative package Rep. Horsford is introducing reflects a simple but powerful truth: our nation is strongest when it remembers, respects, and uplifts those who have served.

The Veterans Education and Transfer (VET) Extension Act modernizes the Post-9/11 GI Bill to help veterans finish their education and plan for their families’ futures. It provides additional eligibility for veterans who need extra time to complete foundational coursework, and it expands flexibility for transferring benefits to dependents, ensuring that opportunity continues long after military service ends.

The Strengthening Transparent Reporting to Improve Veteran Equality (STRIVE) Act enhances accountability in the Department of Veterans Affairs by requiring the VA and the Government Accountability Office to collect and report data on disability benefit decisions. This legislation strengthens congressional oversight and helps ensure veterans’ benefits are administered with clarity, consistency, and integrity.

The Headstones for Honor Act restores dignity to forgotten heroes by authorizing the VA to provide headstones and markers for enslaved individuals and others who supported the nation’s defense but were barred from formal service. It corrects historical omissions and preserves their legacy for future generations, ensuring that every life given in service to the nation is remembered with respect and gratitude.

“On this Veterans Day, we honor generations of Americans who have answered the call of duty, stood guard over freedom, and defended the ideals that define our nation,” Rep. Horsford continued. “Their courage is the foundation of our democracy and the measure of our national character. Our gratitude must be more than words – it must be shown through action. This legislation is part of that commitment, ensuring that every veteran is recognized, supported, and given the opportunities they have earned through their service to America.”
