Horsford Statement on H.J. Res 42
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) issued a statement following the House passage of H.J. Res. 42, a bill to overturn police reforms in the District of Columbia designed to make communities safer and hold police accountable in Washington, DC.
“Bad policing must be stopped. And the residents of the District of Columbia and the representatives they elected to their local Council supported reforms designed to do just that. First and foremost, the U.S. House of Representatives should not interfere in Washington, DC's local laws. This overreach is an insult to the citizens of the District of Columbia who have sought statehood to make sure efforts like these would come to an end,” said Congressman Horsford. “With this vote, House Republicans are choosing to allow police to use fatal chokeholds and commit crimes without losing their jobs as law enforcement. Thanks to President Biden’s commitment to veto this bill if it gets to his desk, I know that these reforms will continue to improve community confidence in their local law enforcement. They are similar to reforms passed across the country in large and small cities in the wake of the deaths of Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Breonna Taylor, and so many others. I voted against this effort to weaken DC’s community-driven and evidence-based police reform and stand by the District’s council and mayor's autonomy to make best decisions for their constituents.”
