Statement from Congressman Horsford on Hard-Fought Extension of the Eviction Moratorium

August 3, 2021

Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) applauded President Biden's decision to extend a temporary ban on evictions to the areas hardest-hit by COVID-19. The extension came after days of pressure by Congressman Horsford and other Congressional Democrats.

"Last week, I called for an extension of the eviction moratorium to ensure that Nevada families would not be evicted as we work to crush the pandemic. I know firsthand the trauma of eviction — and it's something no child should experience, especially just weeks before school begins," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "As COVID-19 and the delta variant continue to threaten public health, it was imperative for President Biden to extend the moratorium on a limited basis. I'm glad that the President heeded my call to keep families safe during this crisis.

"Congress has approved $46.5 billion to provide rental assistance to families, with nearly $373 million for the state of Nevada. I will continue to work closely with state and local partners to ensure that landlords who work with their tenants to avoid eviction are appropriately compensated.

"Over the last week, Congresswoman Cori Bush, Chairwoman Maxine Waters, and others have led our movement to keep families in their homes. Their leadership cannot be forgotten — and millions of Americans will be forever grateful for their work."
