Statement from Congressman Horsford Condemning Alabama State Law To Ban Abortions
WASHINGTON, DC. - Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following statement condemning the Alabama law that bans abortions in the state with very few exceptions.
"Alabama's law is not just an attack on Roe v. Wade, it's an attack on women and their right to choose," said Congressman Horsford. "Women won't go back to the days where policy dictates what they do with their bodies. This restrictive law on reproductive freedom is a huge setback in overcoming gender inequality."
"As citizens, we must hold our elected leaders accountable for defending our constitutional freedoms. As lawmakers, it's our duty to defend these freedoms for all Americans and that is what I will continue to do in Washington."
On Wednesday, May 15, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed the abortion ban into law. This challenges the 1973 ruling of Roe v. Wade establishing abortion as a constitutional right.
In the past three weeks, as many as three states have passed similar laws restricting women's reproductive rights. Mississippi, Ohio, and most recently Georgia have signed "heartbeat bills" -- a restrictive measure that prohibits abortions once a fetus' heartbeat can be detected.
