Statement from Congressman Horsford on Afghanistan

August 16, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) issued the following statement on the evolving security situation in Afghanistan:

"The United States must do everything within our power to protect the American troops and civilians on the ground in Afghanistan, as well as our allies and their families. Right now, our most urgent priority must be to secure the Kabul airport and ensure an immediate and orderly evacuation of U.S. citizens and those under U.S. protection.

"I urge the administration to move quickly to evacuate as many eligible Afghan families as possible and process their visa applications in a safe location. We must make every effort to fulfil our moral obligation to those who have bravely served alongside our troops.

"The people of Afghanistan have always deserved security and freedom. In the months to come, we can debate the legacy of the war in Afghanistan while continuing to support our partners on the ground. Today, our focus must be on saving lives.

"As this war comes to an end, we owe a debt of thanks to the American troops who served in Afghanistan and the military families who supported them at home. They are heroes, and we will continue to honor the sacrifices they made for our nation."
