Statement from Congressman Steven Horsford on the FY 2021 Joint Budget Resolution
WASHINGTON, D.C. — After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer filed a FY 2021 Joint Budget Resolution to help Congress quickly pass much-needed COVID-19 relief, Congressman Steven Horsford released the following statement:
"The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated Nevada's economy, with too many families out-of-work or struggling. Our communities are counting on Congress to provide relief now," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "I commend President Biden's efforts to engage my Republican colleagues on a bipartisan COVID-19 package. As a member of the House Budget Committee, I am committed to keeping all our legislative options open to deliver immediate assistance to Nevada families, workers, and small businesses. We must crush this virus and work towards a full economic recovery for all."
This Joint Budget Resolution provides a key framework to quickly pass COVID-19 relief for families in need. The Resolution filed today includes instructions to provide:
- Direct economic relief payments to families and individuals
- Funding for vaccines, testing, public health programs, childcare, and safe return to in-person learning
- Relief for small businesses, with additional grants that are specifically targeted to help job-creating entertainment venues in Nevada's 4th District and across the country
- Hunger relief through the SNAP, WIC, and Pandemic-EBT programs
- Expanded unemployment insurance with a $400/week federal enhancement through September 2021
- Support for health care (including mental health and telehealth) programs to keep Nevada's veterans healthy and protected from COVID-19
- Funding for health care, education, and social services in Native American communities
- Support for grant programs to help low-income and minority communities, which have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19
- Relief for rent and mortgage payments, as well as assistance for those who have lost their homes
- Support for expanded production of PPE and medical supplies through the Defense Production Act
- Investments in broadband and distance learning to close the digital divide and help students learn during this challenging time
