Horsford, Dem Leader Hakeem Jeffries Hold Community Meeting in Las Vegas
Local Lawmaker Connects Advocates, Residents, and Small Businesses with National Democratic Leader to Chart a New Course Forward
LAS VEGAS – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) today welcomed House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) to his Las Vegas Congressional District for a community meeting about restoring and expanding healthcare, lowering costs of everyday goods, securing Nevada’s energy and economic future, and ensuring working class Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.
The meeting comes just weeks after Horsford was elected by his fellow Congressional Democrats to serve on the party leadership team. Horsford’s role, the Democratic Caucus Leadership Representative, ensures the voices of rising lawmakers are included in the Caucus’ decision-making.
“Nevada is a bellwether for the country when it comes to economic policies,” Rep. Horsford said. “Tourism drops fast during economic downturns, and the impact lingers long after hard times end.
“Understanding the challenges we face will ensure Democrats build an economy that truly puts working people first,” Horsford continued. “I thank Leader Jeffries for traveling across the country to hear from our community, and I thank every one of my constituents who made this event such a success. People-led policies depend on communities speaking up, and today, my constituents made their voices heard.”
Today’s meeting was the second event of a broader effort driven by Leader Jeffries to ensure Congressional Democrats hear from the American people throughout August and bring those voices back to Washington in September. The goal is to co-create a future driven by everyday people with opportunities for all Americans, as opposed to the wealthy few who benefit under the current administration.
“It was an honor and a privilege to join hardworking people from across Nevada to share our vision, our values and our voices as we discussed what a better neighborhood, a better future, a better way of life can look like. I’m grateful to Congressman Steven Horsford for hosting us and for his continued leadership on this issue,” Leader Jeffries said. “Donald Trump and House Republicans promised that they were going to lower the high cost of living on day one, but costs aren’t going down, they’re going up. House Democrats believe that when you work hard and play by the rules in America, you should be able to live a good life, which means a good-paying job, good healthcare, a good education for your children and a good retirement. So, we will continue to travel throughout the country to stand up, speak up and show up for the American people.”
