Horsford on Health Care Vote: One Step Closer to Restoring Critical Tax Credit for 85K Nevadans

January 8, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the following statement today as the U.S. House of Representatives passed a three-year extension of a critical health care tax credit that expired at the end of 2025. The tax credit, which was originally created by the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), helped more than 24 million Americans obtain health insurance before it lapsed.

Democrats worked throughout 2025 to extend the health care tax credit – including two amendments and standalone legislation introduced by Rep. Horsford – but every effort was blocked by a party line vote. Today’s events follow a successful discharge petition brought by Democratic Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries which drew support from four Republicans to force a vote on extending the tax credit.

“We are one step closer to restoring the health care tax credit that 85,000 Nevadans have relied on every single year,” Rep. Horsford said. “I am proud to have worked with Leader Jeffries to pass this bi-partisan bill that restores affordable health care for millions of Americans. Republicans made tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations a top priority in 2025 – now it’s time to deliver relief for working families. I urge Senate Republicans to join Democrats in reversing the 200-percent premium hikes that their political gamesmanship has caused. My constituents can’t afford to spend $1,800 each month for health insurance – it’s one more example of the Republican-driven Affordability Crisis that Americans are facing right now, and it needs to stop.”

Rep. Horsford fought throughout 2025 to extend the health care tax credit before it expired

On May 14, 2025, Rep. Horsford offered an amendment to the Republican “Big Beautiful” bill during the House Ways and Means Committee markup to make the health care tax credit permanent.

On November 11, 2025, Rep. Horsford offered an amendment in the House Rules Committee to divert President Trump’s Argentina bailout to fund health care tax credits instead.

On November 18, 2025, Rep. Horsford introduced the Helping Every American Lower Their Healthcare (HEALTH) Act, legislation that would codify his amendment from the week prior, redirecting the bailout of up to $40 billion that President Trump gave to Argentina, and instead use it to fully fund the health care tax credit for up to two years.
