Congressman Horsford Joins League of Conservation Voters, Climate Power, and Fellow House Democrats to Call for Urgent Passage of the Build Back Better Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV-04) joined the League of Conservation Voters, Climate Power, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and other House Democrats to highlight the urgent need for climate action through the Build Back Better Act.
"In Nevada's Fourth District and across Western states, rising temperatures and devastating droughts are endangering our communities. The time for climate action is now," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "I'm proud to support the Build Back Better Act, which makes big, bold investments in our nation's clean energy future. By passing this ambitious bill, we can create jobs and address the worst impacts of the climate crisis before it is too late."
"We must cut climate pollution in half by 2030 and we must transition to 100% clean energy once and for all. It is so unacceptable that nearly one in three people in this country this summer alone have experienced climate fueled extreme weather — this has to stop. The time for Congress to pass the Build Back Better Act and send it to President Biden is now," said Tiernan Sittenfeld, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at the League of Conservation Voters.
Nevada's Fourth District has been on the front lines of the climate crisis, with residents facing rising temperatures, increased wildfire danger, and prolonged droughts. The consequences of climate change fall disproportionately on low-income communities and communities of color, who are most at risk for extreme heat and air pollution. In September, analysis published by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada identified several communities in Nevada's Fourth District at unique risk for extreme heat, including North Las Vegas and West Las Vegas. In total, 115,000 Southern Nevada residents live in areas at heightened risk for extreme heat, and 80 percent of residents in those areas are people of color.
Polling in Nevada's Fourth District has found strong support for action to address the climate crisis. Among voters in the Fourth District:
- 81% support investments to rebuild roads and bridges and modernize public transportation to ensure it is cleaner and able to serve more people.
- 67% support addressing the challenge of climate change by shifting to greater use of clean energy, reducing carbon pollution from vehicles and industry, and making homes and buildings more energy efficient. 70% support investments in clean energy such as wind and solar power by extending tax credits to spur innovation and manufacturing.
- 61% support investments in electric vehicles and charging stations to reduce pollution and help more Americans buy clean cars.
