Congressman Steven Horsford Launches Radio Campaign to Promote the Child Tax Credit Ahead of May 17 Tax Filing Deadline

May 13, 2021

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Congressman Steven Horsford has launched a bilingual radio information campaign to raise awareness about the need for Nevada families to file their taxes by May 17, 2021 to qualify for monthly Child Tax Credit (CTC) payments.

"The expanded Child Tax Credit is an important tax cut for families with children, and I'm excited to launch this public information campaign to highlight the benefits that it will provide," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "Starting in July, monthly Child Tax Credit payments will help thousands of Nevada families pay their bills, cover child care expenses, and recover from the pandemic. I encourage all Nevada families to complete their taxes by the May 17 tax filing deadline to ensure they can receive the money they deserve."

The 30-second radio spots are airing in English on KCEP 88.1 and REAL 103.9, and in Spanish on Univision's KSIF 103.5. In addition to the radio outreach, Congressman Horsford published an op-ed in the Las Vegas Sun on the Child Tax Credit, and is working closely with community partners to raise awareness about the importance of the upcoming tax deadline.

Background:

As part of the American Rescue Plan, Congress temporarily increased and extended the Child Tax Credit to $3,600 per child for children under six years old, and $3,000 per child for children 6-17. Half of the credit will be paid in six monthly increments from July - December 2021, with the remainder available when families receive their 2021 tax returns.

To qualify for the credit, families must file their 2020 federal taxes by May 17, or use a non-filer tool that will become available on IRS.gov in coming weeks.

Most Nevada families will be eligible for the full credit, which begins to phase out at yearly earnings above $75,000 (single filers), $112,500 (head of household), or $150,000 (married couples). Families that made under $57,000 in 2020 are eligible to receive free tax assistance through the Nevada Free Taxes Coalition.
