Congressman Steven Horsford Statement on Las Vegas Shootings

June 2, 2020

Las Vegas, Nev. -- Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) released the below statement in response to reports of two shootings in Las Vegas:

"Last night, as peaceful protests were coming to a close, two people were shot in separate events, including an officer, Shay Mikalonis, of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. I met with Metro regarding the officer's health as he fights to stay alive. My prayers are with him, his family and his colleagues. No one should be in fear of their life, whether expressing their constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful protest or working to protect and serve our community.

I'm also meeting with and listening to those who continue to feel anger and frustration because of the killing of black men, women and children like George Floyd, Ahmaud Arber, Breonna Taylor and so many like them -- who should still be alive today. I understand that they want change now and I agree. We need to address the root causes of these injustices that have been a stain on our nation since her founding.

Our community, and our nation as a whole, is hurting. We need to continue to have honest dialogue about race and other injustices and more importantly, act boldly for the change we need throughout our society."
