Congressman Steven Horsford Statement on Trump Administration Budget

February 10, 2020

Washington, D.C. — On Monday, February 10, 2020, Congressman Steven Horsford, a member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on the President's proposed budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021.

"Every year, the President's budget shows that he does not value the lives and health of our most vulnerable Americans or the success and security of hard-working families across the country. This year, I am proud to stand with my colleagues in the House Budget Committee, under the guidance of Chairman John Yarmuth, and work to protect the programs that the President has sought to destructively slash in this proposal," Congressman Horsford said. "Not only does this proposal threaten my constituent's access to Medicaid, and Affordable Care Act programs that protect Nevadans with pre-existing conditions, but it also hacks away at Nevada's dollars for affordable housing and nutrition assistance. The administration also shows a disregard for my state with the annihilation of funding for the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act."

The White House proposes to cut spending by $4.6 trillion over a decade with $292 billion from safety-net cuts. Over ten years, Medicaid would see a cut of about $900 billion in funding; Medicare would see about $500 billion in cuts over that same period.

Funding for federal disability programs, including Social Security's Disability Insurance program, would see a cut of $63 billion. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would be cut by $182 billion over ten years as a result of proposed stringent work requirements.

While proposing the destructive cuts, the President also requested an additional $2 billion for his unnecessary wall along the southern border, in addition to the billions of dollars he has stolen for the project from the Department of Defense over the course of his time in office.

The Congressman will be participating in a hearing on the President's proposed budget on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the House Budget Committee.
