Congressman Steven Horsford Votes to Support Nevada’s Veterans

February 26, 2020

Washington, D.C. — On Tuesday, February 26, 2020, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) voted to pass five pieces of legislation to better the lives of Veterans in Nevada and across the country. This includes legislation that will expand benefits for spouses of servicemembers, increases grants available to organizations that provide legal services to homeless veterans, and extends time periods that veterans may request educational assistance benefits.

"Our nation's veterans willingly put their lives in harm's way to defend our country and everything it stands for — today, I hope these votes will contribute to bettering their lives and the lives of their families," Congressman Horsford said. "The brave few that have answered the call and taken up the cause of preserving our democracy deserve nothing less than to know that their elected representatives are fighting for them every day. My district is home to more than 59,000 veterans and the thousands of active-duty servicemembers stationed at Nellis and Creech Air Force bases, Hawthorne Army Depot, and the Nevada Testing and Training Range. My office hears from veterans every day that are frustrated with the lack of transparency in accessing their records or benefits. With these bills, we will bring real change to the lives of those to whom we are forever indebted."

The bills passed today include:

  1. H.R. 2227, the Gold Star Spouses and Spouses of Injured Servicemembers Leasing Relief Expansion Act of 2019, to allow spouses of servicemembers who are catastrophically injured, become ill or pass away while in military service to terminate their leases for homes or vehicles.
  2. H.R. 4852, the GIVE Act, to allow veterans access to information about postsecondary educational institutions' religious affiliation, whether the institution serves minorities, or if the institution is gender-specific.
  3. H.R. 3749, the Legal Services for Homeless Veterans Act, to create grants for organizations that provide legal services for homeless veterans and veterans at risk for homelessness.
  4. H.R. 4613, the VA Reporting Transparency Act, which directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to create a website that allows the public to obtain electronic copies of Congressional requested reports.
  5. H.R. 561, the Protecting Business Opportunities for Veterans Act, to extend the period in which educational assistance may be requested under the All-Volunteer Educational Assistance Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
