Horsford: Job Corps Cuts Rob Nevadans of Brighter Futures

Lawmaker Calls on Labor Secretary to Ensure Critical Program Continues

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04), alongside Representatives Sanford Bishop (GA-02), Brett Guthrie (KY-02), and 198 fellow lawmakers today sent a bipartisan letter urging Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer to continue the full operations of the Job Corps program.

The letter follows an order from President Trump last week to begin a “phased pause” in operations that eliminates funding for 99 Job Corps centers across the country by June 30, 2025 – including the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center in Nevada.

On June 4, a U.S. District Judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from eliminating Job Corps, pending further rulings in the case and an appearance by the Department of Labor at a court hearing on June 17.

“Job Corps gives disadvantaged youth across the country an opportunity to invest in their own growth and determine their own career path,” Rep. Horsford said. “Zeroing out funding for this program robs hundreds of Nevadans of a brighter future, leaves 170 staff out of work, and ensures our communities are less prepared to meet growing workforce needs.”

Since 1979, the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center has served approximately 23,000 people, and has the capacity to enroll 700 students. In Nevada, over 81 percent of Job Corps students secure full-time employment, earning an average wage of more than $17.97 per hour. The residential training program helps to uplift those in low-income communities and helps place students in fields like manufacturing, healthcare, constitution and more.

“This is a choice between someone age 16-to-24 being homeless, or that same person building a productive career that uplifts their community,” Horsford continued. “The Trump administration is ensuring those who start from humble beginnings have one less opportunity to get ahead.”
