Horsford to Treasury Secretary: We Need Housing Relief, Not Healthcare Cuts
Lawmaker Highlights How Secretary Benefits from Republican Tax Plan
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) pressed U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent yesterday on the harm Trump Administration policies will cause in Las Vegas and across Nevada.
The Silver State was impacted early by Trump’s trade war and tariff taxes. As consumer confidence fell to a fifty-year low in the U.S. and travel from abroad dropped by 20 percent, tourism-based economies like that in Las Vegas saw an immediate slowdown.
Against this backdrop, Nevadans are struggling through a housing crisis driven by out-of-state speculators and bracing for draconian cuts to Medicaid that could impact 811,000 Nevadans.
“The Trump administration is giving tax breaks to the same Wall Street speculators who price Nevadans out of local housing, and they’re kicking millions of Americans off their healthcare to pay for it,” Rep. Horsford said. “Secretary Bessent owes my constituents and the American people answers, but all we got from him today is evasion. The person overseeing our tax code is an active beneficiary of Trump’s tax schemes, and working Americans are paying the price.”
When Rep. Horsford pressed Secretary Bessent on the ways he would benefit from the Republican tax plan, he refused to respond. Video of the exchange is available here.
On May 6, Rep. Horsford launched a Housing Policy Platform to address the drivers of Nevada’s housing crisis. Horsford developed the platform following a months-long listening campaign to hear directly from constituents about the challenges they face paying rent or their mortgage.
