Horsford, Ways & Means Democrats Demand Answers as Trump/Musk Admin Targets Social Security
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) today led Ways & Means Committee Democrats in a Resolution of Inquiry into the backdoor benefit cuts that President Trump and Elon Musk are enacting against the Social Security Administration (SSA).
The Resolution of Inquiry, which is a key tool for Congressional oversight, gives the President 14 days to provide all documents and copies, records, audio recordings, memorandum, and more to the House of Representatives relating to:
- SSA plans to force seniors, survivors, spouses, and children to apply for benefits in person at a Social Security field office if they face technical difficulties filing their claim online.
- Closures of SSA offices, including field offices and hearing offices;
- Reductions of SSA staff, including reduction-in-force (RRIF) layoffs.
Rep. Horsford released the following statement:
“My constituents who paid into Social Security deserve the benefits they’ve earned, regardless of whether they visit a field office,” Rep. Horsford said. “Social Security recipients may not have the mobility for an in-person visit, or they may live in remote areas without offices nearby. Either the Trump administration overlooked these very obvious facts, or they simply don’t care. Either way, Nevadans and people across America deserve better.
“The Resolution of Inquiry I’m leading today will bring accountability to an administration that is shutting down SSA field offices and simultaneously trying to funnel scores of additional customers into them,” Rep. Horsford continued. “The obvious impact will be diminished customer service, which feeds into the Republican drive to privatize the benefit. The only winners from privatization are wealthy investors, and the clear losers are the American people.”
