Rep. Horsford Announces $2 Million to Help Justice-Involved Youths Build Brighter Futures
NORTH LAS VEGAS - Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) today announced an award of $2 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Growth Opportunities program for CPLC Nevada, Inc.
The funds will support CPLC-NV’s Youth Growth Las Vegas project to prepare 156 justice-involved and/or at-risk youth for employment through education and training, paid work experiences, mentorship, and leadership development, along with 12-month follow up services.
Congressman Horsford, who previously spent a decade running the largest job training program in Nevada, released the following statement:
“The $2 million grant I’m announcing today will help CPLC Nevada change the trajectory of more than 150 deserving lives, empowering these young people to chart their own course to stable, productive futures,” Rep. Horsford said. “When I served as CEO of Nevada Partners, I saw faces hardened by crime light up at the thought of new opportunities. Nobody wants to live a life of crime, and programs like this offer people who want to turn the page a chance at writing an entirely new chapter in their lives.”
“This grant is a powerful investment in the future of our youth and CPLC Nevada is committed to empowering justice-involved and at-risk young people with the tools, training, and mentorship they need to build stable and successful futures,” Andrés Contreras, CPLC Nevada Human & Health Services Executive Vice President said. “We are deeply grateful for Congressman Horsford’s dedication to creating opportunities for our community and for his leadership in securing this transformative funding. Together, we can help change the trajectory of these young lives and strengthen our entire community.”
Congressman Horsford brings a unique perspective as a lawmaker whose own life was impacted by gun violence. As an elected leader, he has channeled the pain of losing his father in an act of senseless gun violence into legislation to protect others from enduring the same loss. His bill, the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, seeks to prevent crime before it happens by investing $5 billion in anti-violence programs, and $1.5 billion in workforce training and job opportunities just like CPLC Nevada’s Youth Growth Las Vegas project.
“I know the pain of loss, and I’ve seen how community investment can make all the difference in the world for someone ensnared in a life of violence and crime” Rep. Horsford continued. “There is nothing I wouldn’t give for one more hug with my father. My Break the Cycle of Violence Act, and investments like this grant, mean the world to me because they will prevent others from knowing the same sense of loss that I do.”
