Congressman Steven Horsford Delivers Remarks in Support of Secretary-designate General Lloyd Austin
Today, I rise to speak in favor of granting a waiver for retired Army General Lloyd Austin and his historic nomination to serve as the 28th Secretary of Defense, making him the first African-American in U.S. history to hold this position. Over four decades, Secretary-designate Austin served our nation with unwavering dedication in the United States Army before retiring. Moreover, he will serve as a leader and role model for our courageous service members. I had the privilege of personally speaking with Secretary-designate Austin about the needs of service members and their families in Nevada's fourth district. This includes matters related to housing, mental health, childcare, and education. With his exceptional leadership, experience, and dedication to civilian control of the military, Secretary-designate Austin will ensure our country meets its national security requirements. Moreover, his confirmation as Secretary of Defense will send a powerful message of inclusion to all service members, particularly those from diverse backgrounds who comprise over 40 percent of our armed forces.
