Today, the Armed Services Committee is reviewing & debating this year's National Defense Authorization Act. I'll work to ensure that the service members in each installation in Nevada receive the support they need to defend our national security at home & abroad.
WASHINGTON - Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) today issued the following statement after President Biden nominated General Charles Q. Brown to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
I raise important concerns about the mental health of remotely piloted aircraft pilots and their crews, emphasizing the need for adequate mental health screenings and support. Additionally, I address the housing shortage of service members at Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases, highlighting the need for solutions such as providing apartments and engaging with communities to address critical housing needs.
During the testimony, I discuss the importance of adequately funding and maintaining smaller rural, military installations, such as the Hawthorne Army Depot in my district. I also address the Army's efforts to combat harmful behaviors and express concerns about the challenges posed by unpredictable world events in achieving full readiness implementation.
I am glad to see the large-scale investments in taking care of our service members in President Biden's FY24 budget by increasing service member compensation, launching Universal pre-kindergarten at all Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and continuing to combat sexual assault and harassment in the services. I believe it is critically important to support policies that ensure our forces can work as a cohesive team and that means addressing disparities that affect our military service members of color and our women service members.
It is imperative to acknowledge the indispensable role military academies play in producing upcoming leaders who uphold the Department of Defense's aim of cultivating an all-encompassing and varied force. Moreover, it is of utmost importance that we give priority to preserving the values of the U.S. military in our recruitment strategies and take active measures to eliminate individuals associated with extremist groups or movements.
