Congressman Steven Horsford Joins Teachers, Students, and Parents to Discuss Challenges in Education During COVID-19

September 2, 2020

North Las Vegas, Nev. -- Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) hosted a virtual education roundtable as part of a Congressional Day of Action to discuss the challenges and needs of educators, students, and parents in Nevada's Fourth Congressional District.

"Even before the start of this pandemic, our public schools were chronically underfunded. Now, during a global health crisis, our education system is suffering from devastating budget cuts that are worsening existing inequities for students of color, underserved communities, and families hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "I'll continue to do all I can in Congress to get schools the resources and funding they need and prevent any further damage to our children's future."

In May, Congressman Horsford voted to pass the Heroes Act, a robust COVID-19 relief package that meets the needs of our country. The legislation invests more than $100 billion in direct emergency funding for students, schools, and institutions to maintain access to education.

A fact sheet on specific education provisions of the Heroes Act can be found here.

Significant and immediate federal relief for public schools is also critical to preventing mass teacher layoffs and addressing budget shortfalls in education. Approximately 900,000 school employees have already lost their jobs by July 2020, and according to the American Federation of Teachers, this number could be over 1.4 million without federal action. States across the country, including Nevada, have had to cut funding for education to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.
