Congressman Steven Horsford Votes to Denounce Anti-Asian Sentiment Caused by Coronavirus

September 18, 2020

Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04), an Associate Member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, voted to pass House Resolution 908, condemning all forms of anti-Asian sentiment as related to COVID-19.

"The coronavirus has impacted all of our communities, but since the start of the pandemic, Asian Americans have been the target of racist and xenophobic attacks. What is worse is that our nation's leaders continue to perpetuate this shameful behavior with disinformation and anti-Asian rhetoric," said Congressman Steven Horsford. "Today, the House sent a strong message that hate has no home here. I'm proud to stand in solidarity with our Asian Americans community and recommit to protecting the lives of every person in our country, regardless of their background."

Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in Southern Nevada. The Census estimates more than 220,000 Asian Americans live in Clark County today.

Congressman Horsford was an original cosponsor of the House Resolution to denounce the anti-Asian sentiment that has occurred since the outbreak of the coronavirus. The resolution:

  • Calls on all public officials to condemn and denounce any and all anti-Asian sentiment in any form;
  • Recognizes that the health and safety of all Americans, no matter their background, must be of utmost priority;
  • Condemns all manifestations of expressions of racism, xenophobia, discrimination, anti-Asian sentiment, scapegoating, and ethnic or religious intolerance;
  • Calls on Federal law enforcement officials, working with State and local officials:
  • To expeditiously investigate and document all credible reports of hate crimes and incidents and threats against the Asian American community in the United States;
  • To collect data to document the rise of incidences of hate crimes due to COVID-19;
  • To hold the perpetrators of those crimes, incidents, or threats accountable and bring such perpetrators to justice;
  • Recommits United States leadership in building more inclusive, diverse, and tolerant societies:
  • To prioritize language access and inclusivity in communication practices; and
  • To combat misinformation and discrimination that put Asian Americans at risk.
