WASHINGTON — Nevada will receive $89 million this year as part of a $20 billion allotment for public transit upgrades and improvements that were included in the bipartisan infrastructure law, administration officials said Wednesday.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters on a conference call that the $20 billion is the "largest investment in public transit in our nation's history."
U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., will hold a news conference 10 a.m. Thursday at the Nevada Energy Office to highlight the $38 million Nevada will receive from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to expand the state's electric vehicle charging network.
They will discuss the role the funding will play in speeding up the adoption of electric vehicles, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting Nevada's climate goals, Horsford's office said.
Nevada scored a victory this week when the U.S. Department of Energy announced it was embracing a policy of requiring state and local approval for development of any nuclear waste storage site. That move, combined with staunch opposition among Nevada's leaders to the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository, amounted to a reprieve from any immediate prospect of reviving the atrocious facility.
