On Thursday, July 27, 2023, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) hosted a roundtable and press conference to introduce the Break the Cycle of Violence Act. Evidence-based community violence intervention and prevention programs designed to interrupt cycles of violence and retaliation have proven to be highly effective at reducing rates of community violence, saving both lives and taxpayer dollars. From 2012 to 2013, a $2 million violence reduction program in two Massachusetts cities generated nearly $15 million in savings from decreases in crime.
Today, I stand in strong support of the hard-working labor force that drives our country forward. As a representative for Nevada, which includes the Las Vegas area, I am well aware of the dangers that come with the scorching summer heat. Unfortunately, the Texas governor's new policy has eliminated water break protections, impacting not only Texas but also areas like Nevada, where we are experiencing record-breaking temperatures. I firmly believe that we need Federal action to protect these hardworking workers.
In our democracy, the ability to communicate and connect is vital, and for the black community and people of color, this communication must be trustworthy and local. Unfortunately, we have seen our community targeted with misinformation and disinformation, particularly after the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action. This ruling was a concerning moment for our community, and we've witnessed both positive and negative actions in response.
Well, let me start by saying that the black vote is not only important to the Democratic party, but it's crucial for America as a whole. When we uplift black people, we uplift everyone, and that's why the work of civil rights leaders, including voting rights activists, criminal justice reform advocates, and those fighting for economic opportunities for Black America, is so essential. As we approach the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington, we continue to march for justice, equality, and the preservation of our democracy.
I want to extend my gratitude to the panel for their service and express my appreciation for their insights. During our discussion, we emphasized the importance of cultivating diverse and influential leaders in our military services. Overall, this panel discussion highlighted the shared dedication to promoting diversity in the military services and ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all young men and women across the nation.
Some of my colleagues advocate for running government like a business, yet they focus on creating divisions in the military instead of following the same practices as our best defense companies. Our military understands that diversity is a strategic asset that enhances our capacity to overcome challenges. However, some individuals are putting partisan political maneuvers over the welfare of our service members and threatening national security. I remain committed to fighting for a fair & beneficial NDAA that all Nevadans can be proud of.
Congressman Steven Horsford responds to the inappropriate remarks made by Arizona Republican Congressman Eli Crane.
As a member of the Armed Services Committee, I am dedicated to prioritizing the needs of our military service members and their families. It is disappointing that certain amendments benefiting our service members were rejected, while extreme factions sought to deny access to healthcare and eliminate diverse positions within the military. Senate Democrats must prioritize national security and remove these contentious measures from the bill to ensure its successful implementation. Furthermore, derogatory remarks made by a fellow congressman are unacceptable, and an apology is necessary.
