I am writing to express my concern about the targeting of middle-class families by investors who are significantly raising rents, sometimes by more than 30 percent. I agree with Sepela that this practice needs to stop. There should be limitations on how much rent can be increased, and it seems that these investors have gone too far by adding even more.
Throughout my time in public service, I have always been a strong advocate for equal treatment under the law for everyone. It is especially important to me that women have the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions, as they face very real challenges to their freedoms.
I'm Congressman Stephen Horsford and I just left the floor where I voted in favor of protecting a woman's freedom to make her own health care decisions. The egregious ruling by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe versus Wade has taken back the rights that women have fought so hard for to advance women's health care.
I am happy to express the success of securing funding for the North Las Vegas Park and Sports Complex, which is undergoing a major renovation to bring it back to its former glory days, and maybe even better than ever before. The goal now is to revive the Cheyenne Sports Complex and make it the central hub for recreation up north once again.
It's concerning to hear that rental rates in Las Vegas have increased by almost 30% in the past year, especially since our local economy has yet to fully recover. The hospitality industry, which is the main driver of our economy, is still struggling to reach pre-pandemic levels.
I'm currently at the White House with Pastor Troy Martinez, a constituent from Nevada's fourth district and the founder of That in Our Schools. We're discussing the community violence intervention funding that we helped secure in the Safer Communities Act, which will help fund programs like That in Our Schools.
The bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a big step for keeping citizens safe from gun violence the legislation following the deadly elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the hate crime shooting in Buffalo, New York, and the Tulsa, Oklahoma hospital shooting. The bill was approved by Congress on the 30th anniversary of my father's death.
Our schools are the center of the community. They're like the church. We need them to be safe from violence, particularly gun violence.
From my break in the cycle of violence, I have witnessed the devastating impact of gun-related incidents on our society. It is a harsh reality that gun violence remains the leading cause of premature death for Black men and the second leading cause for Latino men and Black women.
