WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) voted to pass H.R. 5118, the Wildfire Response and Drought Resiliency Act, to improve climate resilience, restoration, and mitigation efforts to protect communities in Nevada and across the country from the devastating effects of climate, wildfire and drought.
I'm currently at the White House with Pastor Troy Martinez, a constituent from Nevada's fourth district and the founder of That in Our Schools. We're discussing the community violence intervention funding that we helped secure in the Safer Communities Act, which will help fund programs like That in Our Schools. It's amazing to see the resources finally available to back up Pastor Troy's work, which he has been doing for over 20 years without funding or resources.
The bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a big step for keeping citizens safe from gun violence the legislation following the deadly elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the hate crime shooting in Buffalo, New York, and the Tulsa, Oklahoma hospital shooting. The bill was approved by Congress on the 30th anniversary of my father's death. My dad was shot and killed when I was 19 years old. I was a freshman in college up in Reno. I received a call like a lot of families who get a call about a loved one who's been shot.
Our schools are the center of the community. They're like the church. We need them to be safe from violence, particularly gun violence. The Safer Communities Act funding includes 500 million dollars for school-based mental health services and staff another 500 million to help train and diversify the pipeline of school counselors It's a big step for keeping citizens in Las Vegas and the country safe, including students in our schools!

From my break in the cycle of violence, I have witnessed the devastating impact of gun-related incidents on our society. It is a harsh reality that gun violence remains the leading cause of premature death for Black men and the second leading cause for Latino men and Black women.
